September 2005 The Shoreline Page 13 The annual meeting of the PFKSCO Homeowners’ Assn. took place on July 19 at Town Hall. Directors Larry Kacmarcik and Bill Strube were elected to serve new three year terms and Kacmarcik was also elected by the directors to serve as president of the group for another year. Newly appointed board member Jim Malone was introduced. Jim will serve as the Chair of Sound Parks . Other committee chairs include Darlene Smith, Ocean Parks , Marty Hare, Special Projects, and Bill Strube, Architectural Control. Dominic Baccollo is serving as Vice President and Treasurer. Ted Lindblad made a presentation about the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program currently being established in Pine Knoll Shores. Additional information, including how to volunteer for this project, can be had by contacting Police Chief Joey Culpepper. Director of Inspections and Public Property Chris Jones was also available to discuss the progress of the surface water proj ect in the east end of town. Jones reported that four lots on Yaupon Road have been donated to the town to be used as collection and water treatment basins. When completed the treatment faciftty will be hidden from public view. The design of the project is currently being worked on and many technical processes and permits will be required before this project comes to fruition. A report was made on the PKS Land Use Planning Committee which is entering Phase Two of this two year proj ect. Citizen input into the plan in the coming months is encouraged. The financial position of PIKSCO was PIKSCO Update By Dominic Baccollo reviewed. There will not be a dues increase for fiscal year 2006. Azaela plantings at Gamer Park took place this year and an irrigation system for the new plantings is in the planning stage. An additional kayak rack was installed. There are currently two kayak spots available for renting at a cost of $25 peryear. Call Linda Cumberland at 247- 4818 if interested. Residents seeking to reserve the pavilion for picnics, etc., at Gamer Park must also call Linda to reserve same. New picnic tables were purchased and placed at McNeil Park. The feasibility of erecting a pavilion at Me Neil will be investigated by the Board. The Board is also looking into the matter of repairing/replacing the dock at the park. A report on Hammer Park included an update and expression of appreciation to the many volunteers who do yeoman work at the park during the summer months. Repairs which were made during the past were noted as well as the success of security personnel at the park during the three summer holidays. Vandalism of the gate at Hammer Park continues to be a costly and problematic issue for the board which continues to look for better solutions to the problem. The “Porta-Johns” at Hammer will remain on site into the fall as a convenience for residents. Pet cleanup at the beach and in town continues to be a problem and health issue for our residents. Please demonstrate a concern for others by picking up after your dog(s). Thank you. Finally, the board would like to recognize and express its appreciation to all PIKSCO residents, our volunteers and to our secretary Linda Cumberland. “/Y£ HEARD SOME COMPANIES AREN'T SELLING HOMEOWNERS’INSURANCE ANYMORE.” I STILL OFFER HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE. Hereth Memorial Garden By the PKS When you go over to Town Hall, do you take note of the colorful display of flowers in the garden at the bottom of the steps? Have you wondered how that garden came to be and why it is located there? In 1998, Marguerite “Peg” Hereth, a ten-year member of the PKS Garden Club, died and her husband Lee donated $10,000 to the Garden Club in her memory because “the Garden Club meant a lot to her.” Golly—how were we going to spend so much money? Six months later, Lee died grieving for his wife and that galvanized the Club to do something in memory of both of them. The big Garden Club question was what would be appropriate since both of them shunned publicity and the Garden Club board decided that it had to be something to benefit the appearance of the Town. One day, the inspiration came—the area in front of Town Hall had taken on a neglected look and needed attention. Thus, the idea of a Memorial Garden was born, and as it was discussed, it gained more and more support. There was a lot of planning that went into the project and workers toiled to have the area ready so that it could be dedicated on the occasion of the Garden Club’s 25* anniversary on May 21, 1999.
